Findings and insights from mass timber fire safety experiments

Overview

This presentation summarizes and reviews Dr Wiesner’s fire safety engineering research on mass engineered timber. Multiple large scale compartment fire tests are presented alongside laboratory scale results to highlight findings on fire dynamics in compartments with exposed timber and its structural fire performance. In addition, this talk will give some insight into the behind-the-scenes preparations, decisions and concerns that were addressed to successfully design, build and execute these experiments.

Encapsulated Mass Timber: a new construction type for the 2020 NBC

This seminar will discuss the fire-related national building and fire code changes related to a new construction type called Encapsulated Mass Timber Construction (EMTC) to be used for wood buildings up to twelve storeys. As well, it will provide an overview of ongoing fire research at the National Research Council of Canada into various performance aspects of mass timber construction and tall wood buildings.
