Li-Ion based Battery Energy Storage System: Hazards Evaluation and Mitigation Techniques

Stationary battery energy storage systems (BESS) are gaining prominence as the landscape for energy production is shifting towards renewable resources. Li-Ion batteries are increasingly the preferred type of battery technology for these BESS. However, Li-Ion BESS with their inherent storage technology pose hazardous threats that need to minimized and managed. 

This presentation will include:

·        Overview of current trends in Li-Ion BESS design,

·        Operational hazards associated with BESS installations

·        The international engineering standards that govern the Li-BESS hazard analysis, and

·        Review engineering and performance-based modeling methodology for Li-BESS hazard analysis


Speaker Bio:

Sunil Lakshmipathy, Ph.D. is a lead consultant at Jensen Hughes and has 10+ years of experience in developing computational tools and methods and performing computational analysis in the sectors of industrial process safety, transportation, and aeronautics. Sunil is currently working as an industry consultant conducting performance-based design analysis to evaluate the safety systems and their compliance to standards. Sunil has published several conference papers and peer-reviewed journal articles on the topics related to industrial process safety.
