Findings and insights from mass timber fire safety experiments

Overview

This presentation summarizes and reviews Dr Wiesner’s fire safety engineering research on mass engineered timber. Multiple large scale compartment fire tests are presented alongside laboratory scale results to highlight findings on fire dynamics in compartments with exposed timber and its structural fire performance. In addition, this talk will give some insight into the behind-the-scenes preparations, decisions and concerns that were addressed to successfully design, build and execute these experiments.

Speaker Bio

Dr Felix Wiesner works as Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia and is an Honorary Fellow in the School of Civil Engineering at The University of Queensland. He is an expert in fire safety engineering, with a focus on the fire performance of timber buildings and infrastructure. He has extensive experience in large-scale compartment fire tests to assess the fire dynamics in engineered timber buildings and their structural response. His research interests also consider the role of fire safety within the context of durability and service life of wood products.
