Due to a whole range of factors- not least of which is the mandating of water supplies for firefighting in the building code- there is much confusion about what water supply for firefighting actually should be- both in the context of the building code as well as in the context of the design of water supply infrastructure.
John Ivison, who has chaired a Task Group on water supplies convened by EGBC’s building code committee, will outline how confusion has arisen and how the code changes for both the BC Building Code and the National Building Code of Canada have were developed by consensus to address this problem.
The proposed changes will hopefully clarify the context of water supplies for building code purposes as well as the municipal risks and why they are different from the requirements for individual properties/developments.
The proposed changes have been discussed with NRCC, Building Standards as well as the BC Fire Chiefs Association and will also likely impact the requirements in a wildfire urban interface context.
