Reporting to the Chair, School of Fire Protection Engineering Technology, the Professor will be responsible for providing academic leadership and developing an effective and compelling learning environment for students through designing, revising and delivering curricula. The Professor will participate in the development of the program, including the recruitment and job placement of students, defining and evaluating learning outcomes, and in establishing industry links and partnerships. The Professor will be the academic leader in all related courses in the School of Fire Protection Engineering Technology. The Professor may also be called upon to contribute to other areas of activity ancillary to the academic programs of the School. Within the School of Fire Protection Engineering Technology, the Professor will teach in the technicians and technology engineering programs and will teach a variety of subjects including hazards of materials, chemical extinguishing systems, plan reviews, and fire codes in the School and provide academic tutoring and counselling to students and evaluate student performance.
A College diploma or University degree in Fire Protection Engineering Technology, and four years of fire protection industrial experience are required. A university degree and teaching experience at the post secondary level are desirable. Excellent presentation, communication and human relations skills to interact effectively with the College’s multi-cultural/racial/able staff and student population is requisite, as is an understanding of and commitment to equity in education. The ability to convey conceptual and practical aspects of subjects to students, while respecting their diverse backgrounds, experience and individual learning styles is necessary. Knowledge of current technological trends in the industry and the ability to use modern computerized systems are requisite, as is a commitment to a team approach for problem solving and conflict resolution. Familiarity with computer and web-based learning systems and experience with alternative modes of delivery would be assets. Active participation in industry-wide functions through membership in relevant professional organizations is desirable.
