RESCHEDULED - Fire Deaths in Single-Family Homes – New Research Studying Fuel Volatility and Ventilation

Most fire deaths occur in residential buildings, specifically in single-family homes. The increased airtightness correlating to energy efficiency in these buildings could be changing the way fires develop, potentially impacting the safety of occupants and responding firefighters. This presentation will outline research currently underway at the University of Waterloo on fire and smoke spread relative to fuel volatility and ventilation. The outcome of the research is expected to better inform the impact of airtightness, smoke alarm location, upholstered furniture volatility, and firefighting response to help identify methods and strategies to reduce fire deaths in single-family homes.

Peter Senez of Senez Consulting Ltd will highlight his current research programme at University of Waterloo and the potential impact on building design and FPE practice.

Peter Senez has over 30 years experience in fire engineering, code consulting and the application of fire science to the investigation of fires. He has led the effort within several significant Fire and Life Safety consultancies over the last 30 years and has recently established a new consultancy- Senez Consulting Ltd- to take his fire engineering research and investigation efforts into a new phase of development. In support of the industry, Peter is Chair of the Subcomittee on Research and Innovation for the SFPE and is a Governor on the SFPE Foundation, where he is a member of the executive committee and chair of the Technical Committee. He is actively leading research initiatives for the foundation as well as pursuing his own research in fire ignition and spread within the fire compartment of origin.
