Morrison Hershfield - Fire Protection Systems Engineer

Morrison Hershfield Limited is looking for a Senior Fire Protection Engineer/Specialist for our Markham office. This role will be focused on delivering fire protection systems projects for internal and external clients, including fire alarm, sprinkler, standpipe, and special suppression systems. The position will involve the application fire and life safety and engineering principles to fire protection systems design projects as well as the assessment of existing fire protection systems. An engineering license is required. The position requires the ability to design fire protection systems, assess conditions of existing systems, analyze performance and Code conformance, prepare written reports and cost estimates, undertake site review and verification of systems, and advise clients on recommended fire protection system features. The successful candidate will work in a team environment, working closely with clients and acting as a technical mentor internal to MH as well as to build MH's reputation in the design and construction industry. The position will also involve project management, liaising with authorities having jurisdiction, and sales and marketing to further grow the fire protection systems service line in the local market.

  • Apply fire and life safety principles to fire protection system design projects, as well as the assessment of existing fire protection systems
    Prepare technical reports
  • Design fire protection systems including suppression and detection and other related systems
  • Participate in design reviews, shop drawings reviews, construction site visits and verifications for various fire protection systems
  • Conduct site audits of fire protection systems performance, as-built conditions, and Code conformance
  • Review contract documents, including drawings and specifications for Code conformance
  • Coordinate project teams including fire protection technical resources, contractors and other technical disciplines for successful project delivery
  • Investigate, advise, and solve unusual design problems
  • Identify project opportunities and prepare project proposals
  • Manage projects and be primary client contact


  • Degree in Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • P.Eng. license or eligibility to be licensed is required
  • Minimum 10 years of fire protection design
  • Ability to conduct business development (sales experience is required)
  • Strong technical skills and strong knowledge of fire protection systems design and construction
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a systems project and communicate with clients, authorities and contractors
  • Ability to work in a team environment and mentor other staff
